Steam and sustainability go hand in hand.

Steam is one of industry's oldest energy carriers, and one of the most misunderstood when the topic turns to sustainability. It's easy to see steam only as a cost: fuel in, heat out, CO2 up the stack. But a well-run steam system is often the single largest lever a plant has for cutting emissions, cutting fuel bills, and meeting the new EU disclosure requirements.

That's why we treat steam and sustainability as one conversation, not two. Over the coming months we'll publish deeper pieces on the topics below, the ones our customers ask about most, and the ones where the numbers genuinely move.

What we'll be covering

Topics we look forward to covering.

01

Avoided emissions vs. embodied emissions

A valve's own carbon footprint (PCF) is usually a small number. The tonnes of CO2 it prevents over its lifetime is the number that matters for a plant's Scope 1 reporting.

02

The real cost of a failed steam trap

Industry surveys show 15–30% of mechanical traps fail open at any moment. We'll show how to translate that into fuel, kroner and CO2, per trap, per year.

03

Service life as a sustainability metric

A trap that lasts 15+ years has a very different annualised footprint than one replaced every 3. Longevity is a climate story.

04

The Scope 3 → Scope 1 bridge

Our products sit in your upstream Scope 3, but they reduce your Scope 1 boiler fuel. We'll show how to document that in a way auditors accept.

05

Insulation and fugitive losses

The invisible tax on every uninsulated valve body, bonnet and flange. Small fixes, real numbers.

06

Condensate return

One KPI that captures both energy and water efficiency, and one most plants under-measure.

07

Monitoring and accountability

Why suppliers should be measured on the emissions their products help avoid, not only on the ones they emit making them.

08

EU Taxonomy & CSRD alignment

How steam efficiency work qualifies as green CapEx, and what documentation procurement teams need to make that stick.

Track record

Sustainability reports.

MODU Valves A/S, the parent company MODU Steam is part of, has published annual sustainability reports since 2023. All figures follow the GHG Protocol and are audited by an external ESG reviewer.

We look forward to going deeper on each of the topics above. If your organisation is working on a Scope 1 reduction plan, a CSRD baseline, or a specific decarbonisation project where steam plays a role, we'd love to hear about it.
